ALERT: Western Union Refund Scam Alert

September 2020

People have reported scam emails about the Western Union refund program. Do not reply to any emails telling you to apply for a refund or that ask you to provide personal information. On September 23, 2020, the second round of checks in the Western Union matter will begin mailing. This mailing includes almost 33,000 checks totaling approximately $147 million. People who get checks in this mailing will get 100% of their verified losses. The first round of checks was mailed out on March 11, 2020. We anticipate there will be refunds to additional people in the future.

Here are FAQs about the refund program: What is this case about?

For years, many people who lost money to scams sent their payment through a Western Union wire transfer. Scammers contacted people and promised prizes, loans, jobs, discounted products or other financial rewards in exchange for money upfront. They also pretended to be family members in need of cash, or law enforcement officers demanding payment. The scammers told people to send money through Western Union. No one received the cash, prizes or services they were promised. Because of joint investigations by the FTC, the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the U. S. Postal Inspection Service, Western Union agreed to pay $586 million and admitted to aiding and abetting wire fraud. DOJ is now using that money to provide refunds to people who were tricked into using Western Union to pay scammers.

What was the deadline to file a claim?

The deadline to file a claim was May 31, 2018. The Department of Justice (DOJ) plans to provide a way for people to apply for refunds in the future. When there is information about how to apply, DOJ will post it on the Western Union Remission site.
